A 40-year-old mother, Mrs. Peris Njeri Njoroge, and her three children perished in a fire incident that occurred on the night of Friday, December 30, 2023, in the Kabete constituency, Kiambu County.

Ms. Peris Njeri Njoroge’s daughter, Susan Njeri, 22, a college student, and her two other children, Mark Njuguna, 16, (in secondary school), and Edward Mbugua, 10, (expected to join fifth grade), were asleep when the tragedy unfolded.

The Nyathuna Ward Representative, MCA Eddy Kinyanjui, stated that the victims were completely consumed by the fire, which broke out at around midnight, and its cause is yet to be determined.

“We found the mother and her three children burnt beyond recognition. We came with the fire brigade, but the residents had already put out the fire, although we faced challenges because the area is quite rural,” said Mr. Kinyanjui.

“We have not been able to determine the cause of the fire because even the gas exploded later. The investigation is still ongoing,” explained the politician.

Confirming the incident, Kabete Police Commander, Anthony Mbogo, mentioned that an investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the tragedy.

Relatives and residents, led by the village elder, have urged the police to expedite the investigation into the fire’s cause.

“We found the house burnt, and the bodies were completely charred; they cannot be identified,” said Mr. JJ Kimani, a relative of the victims.

“As a family, we would like to respectfully request the police to expedite the investigation so that we can understand the cause of this tragedy. We cannot say if it was intentional or not because the gas exploded after the fire had started,” said the village elder of Nyathuna.

This comes amid growing concerns about the increase in fire incidents in recent days as the year 2023 comes to a close.
