Benson Lagat and his wife, Joyce Chebii, have long harbored the dream of owning rental houses.

The couple decided to turn this dream into a reality and took a significant step by going to a bank in Nakuru, where they withdrew KSh 700,000.

Their plan was to utilize the funds to procure raw materials for their lifelong project of establishing rental properties.

“We withdrew money around 1 pm because the queue was a bit long. We checked the vehicles; it wasn’t too fully packed, so I suggested that instead of waiting, let’s go and board another matatu,” explained Chebii.

They alighted at the junction in Sobea and opted for a boda boda to cover the remaining distance. Chebii carried the majority of the cash in her handbag, while her husband had KSh 10,000 in his pocket.

However, their hopeful journey took a terrifying turn when a gang of five men intercepted them about 3 km from Sobea. Threatened with violence, the couple was forced to alight, lie down, and faced with the imminent danger of being killed.

Chebii recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “I asked, ‘Why do you want to kill us?’ and they had guns. There were around five people. Consequently, my husband was forced into the car.”

Benson Lagat endured physical assault by the robbers as they made him sit inside the car and then drove off. He mentioned being warned not to look at anyone or face dire consequences.

Eventually, he found himself in a pit, disoriented and alone, with his wife’s empty handbag beside him and KSh 2,000 in his pocket.

Rongai OCPD Wilberforce Sicharani confirmed the couple’s report, assuring that the police are actively working to apprehend the suspects.

“We have recorded the statement from Benson and his wife, and we have also spoken to my DCIO, who is currently outside. We’ve provided them with the number, and they are continuing to search to see if we can locate those criminals,” stated Sicharani.

The pursuit of justice for the traumatized couple is underway as the authorities intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to account.
