Minister of Interior Security Kithure Kindiki has now announced that blogger Daniel Muthiani from Meru was killed by a group of individuals, who will be apprehended at any time from now.
He stated that the murder, which has caused a stir in the country, was planned in four phases.
He mentioned that the first phase involved the suspects luring him out of his home on December 2, 2023, kidnapping him, subjecting him to torture until death, and finally dumping his body, which was discovered four days later in a decomposed state.
“I declare that our investigators are currently concluding the investigation, and those who planned and carried out the murders, including the disposal of the body to conceal the truth, will face the full force of the law,” Prof Kindiki said on his official Facebook account.
In the message dated December 30, 2023, Kindiki referred to the death of the blogger as a “cruel assassination plot.”
At 33, Muthiani had branded himself as a prophet of political and social issues through prayers.
His prayers in the Meru language, which he uploaded on social media platforms, especially YouTube and TikTok, were controversial and targeted individuals with numerous allegations.
With a high school education, Mr. Muthiani gained prominence in the August 8, 2022, general elections as a campaign influencer for Governor Kawira Mwangaza, but later switched sides to those opposing her and aimed at ousting her from office.
In some of the video clips he uploaded on these platforms, he can be heard using negative and heavy language against his targets, even chastising the Maulana himself and urging him to stop hesitating in delivering victory or punishment.
As a native of the Kabuitu village in the Igembe Central constituency, Mr. Muthiani disappeared on December 2, 2023, after allegedly receiving a phone call from someone who claimed he was needed by another prominent figure seeking blogging services.
His grandmother, Irene Kawira, stated that the deceased was the father of two young children.
His body was found more than 70 kilometers away on the banks of the Mutonga River in the Marimanti area within the neighboring Tharaka Nithi County. The autopsy report revealed that he was tortured and strangled to death.
Government pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor stated in his report that the deceased had injuries to the head and chest, and his legs and arms were also broken. He added that Mr. Muthiani likely died on December 2, 2023, before his body was discovered on December 6, 2023, in a state of decomposition.
