Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o and her partner, Selema Masekela, have ended their relationship after being together for almost a year, the actress confirmed on October 19.
Lupita shared the news on her Instagram without explicitly mentioning her former partner, expressing that she needed to reveal this personal truth and distance herself from someone she can no longer trust.
In her heartfelt post, Lupita talked about the recent sadness she has been enduring due to a love that was suddenly extinguished in a heartbreaking and deceitful manner. She admitted that her heartache has led her into a season of deep sorrow and pain.
While Lupita acknowledged her initial inclination to retreat into shadows and hide from the world, she revealed her decision to confront the pain face-to-face, embracing it with courage.
“There are more important things happening in the world right now, and my thoughts are with those who are suffering greatly. At this time, it is important to me to share the truth of my personal situation and to do so with openness and courage,” she wrote.
She acknowledged that the depth of her pain mirrored the depth of her capacity to love, and she chose to confront it with bravery and hope that this difficult time would pass.
The actress explained her choice to share this bitter event publicly, expressing her intention to help others who might be struggling with the grip of heartache. She believed that by speaking about her own grief, she could offer comfort, support, and wisdom to those who might also be in such pain.
“I find myself in a season of heartache because of a love abruptly ended and the loss of a dream. I am tempted to run into the shadows and hide, and return to the light when I have mustered enough strength to say, ‘Nevertheless, I will endure this.’ But I am reminded that the magnitude of the pain I feel is equal to the capacity of my love. And so, I choose to confront the pain, to nurture the courage to face my life as it is, and to believe that this too shall pass,” she wrote.
Lupita expressed the notion that a tender heart eventually begets fearlessness, conveying her hope that this belief holds true.
“They say, a tender heart begets fearlessness. I hope it is true… I share this to preserve it and in the hope that the essence of my experience may be helpful to someone out there going through the heartache trap,” she wrote.
Nyong’o’s fans and some of her celebrity friends have posted thousands of comments in support of the star, who has built a large fanbase over the years with her captivating performances in Hollywood hits like Us and Black Panther.
“We lift you up with love and sisterhood. Your miracles are all around you. Let us count them in confidence and faith,” said Oscar-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay.
Many fans have also hailed Nyong’o for her “bravery” and willingness to openly share a private and sensitive issue with the world.
