In a startling incident, a 67-year-old drug trafficker was apprehended at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on October 3.
Clement Chukwuemeka, arrested with 100 wraps of cocaine concealed in his stomach, shocked officials when he confessed that he was involved in the illegal trade to raise money for marrying a new wife.
The arrest was made by operatives from Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). According to Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy at NDLEA, Chukwuemeka was intercepted during the inward clearance of passengers arriving on Ethiopian Airlines from Addis Ababa.
A body scan revealed multiple pellets of cocaine hidden in his stomach.
While under observation, Chukwuemeka excreted 100 wraps of cocaine weighing 2.195kg in four separate instances.
In his statement to the authorities, he revealed a rather unusual motive for his involvement in drug trafficking. Chukwuemeka claimed to have spent three decades residing in Brazil, Ethiopia, and Thailand, during which he was married.
However, he lost his wife and remained childless. In a bid to start life afresh and fund his new marriage, he resorted to drug trafficking, believing it to be a way out of his circumstances.
