In a shocking incident at Nairobi City Hall, cleaners discovered a 1-year-old girl abandoned in the basement parking lot of the building, sending shockwaves through the staff.
The baby, who was impeccably dressed, was found early on a Thursday morning during the cleaners’ routine tasks.
Appalled by the discovery, the cleaners immediately alerted security officers, who diligently combed the area for more clues before reporting the case at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre Police Station.
Hours later, the security officers and cleaners handed over the infant to the county’s customer service department.
Speaking to Kenyans.CO.KE, Lydia Gatheru, Communications Director & Protocol at Nairobi County Government, confirmed receiving the abandoned baby.
She stated that the security officers and cleaners brought the baby to her office, from where she promptly contacted the Social Services department to assume responsibility for the case.
“Our security and the cleaner that found her brought this baby to my office. We took a step by contacting the Social Services Department,” Gatheru stated.
The Social Services department has taken charge of the situation and has promised to identify the guardian of the abandoned child.
Officials will also conduct an investigation to determine why the baby was left at City Hall and how she managed to access the premises.
Gatheru praised the swift and decisive actions taken by the city hall staff in rescuing the baby, ensuring her safety, and initiating appropriate measures for her well-being.
In the event that the child’s mother or guardian does not come forward to claim her within one year, the Social Services department will initiate the adoption process, aiming to provide the baby with a stable and loving home, offering her a chance for a brighter future.
