A male sleuth from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Kitengela branch, identified as Samuel Simiyu Mukoche, has been arrested for allegedly stealing a phone and laptop from a Nigerian national.
The arrest took place on Monday, October 16, 2023, after the stolen phone was tracked to a person to whom Simiyu had sold it, and the stolen laptop was found in his possession.
The incident unfolded when Simiyu, along with his colleague from Athi-river, responded to a call made by the Nigerian national reporting a sudden death in his apartment.
After processing the scene, the complainant realized his phone and laptop were missing, prompting him to report the theft. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of Simiyu as a suspect in the theft case.
According to a report filed at Kitengela police station, Simiyu was allegedly intoxicated at the time of his arrest.
The report states that the officer was questioned, leading to the recovery of the laptop from his office. Simiyu then led the officers to retrieve the iPhone, which he had already sold within Kitengela town.
Both the laptop and iPhone were recovered, identified by the complainant, and kept as exhibits.
“The said CSI officer was questioned and it was established that he had the laptop in his office. He later led the officers to recover the iPhone which he had already sold within Kitengela town. The laptop and iPhone were recovered and kept as exhibits, inventory drawn and both the laptop and the iPhone positively identified by the complaint, “part of the report read.
Catherine Munguti, the DCI officer in charge of Kitengela, declined to comment on the matter, citing ongoing meetings.
Simiyu, who had been stationed at Kitengela for barely two months following recent transfers of DCI officers, is currently held at Kitengela police station, awaiting arraignment in court.
