In a harrowing incident on Sunday, players of Bondo United FC narrowly escaped a tragedy while en route to their match in Naivasha.
The team, accompanied by members of the technical bench, was traveling in a van along the Londiani-Muhoroni highway when the accident occurred.
Bondo United FC was scheduled to face off against Sunderland Naivasha in a crucial Football Kenya Federation Division One Zone B fixture.
Fortunately, all injured players were swiftly rescued and rushed to a local hospital for specialized medical care.
“Injured players are receiving medical assistance at Fort Ternan Hospital. Lord of second chances, thank you once again,” the club communicated through official channels, expressing gratitude for the players’ survival.
Despite the severity of the accident, no fatalities were reported, eliciting a collective sigh of relief from the sporting community.
Messages of support and prayers for a quick recovery poured in from fellow teams, prominent figures, and well-wishers.
“Prayers to the players and technical staff of Bondo United FC who were involved in a road accident early today,” conveyed KCB Football Club, reflecting the sentiments echoed by figures like former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Siaya Governor James Orengo.
Odinga expressed his concern, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured Bondo United players as they recover from today’s accident near Kericho while en route to Naivasha for a football match.”
Photographs from the scene revealed the wreckage of the 14-seater vehicle, indicating the severity of the accident. Mud-covered windscreens and protruding car parts bore witness to the vehicle’s multiple rollovers.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation, although the presence of mud on the windscreen was attributed to the ongoing heavy rains in the country, which have significantly impacted road conditions.
Authorities swiftly responded, aiding the injured players and managing traffic at the accident site.
