Renowned musician Kevin Kioko, popularly known as Bahati, has announced his intention to run for the position of Nairobi Governor in the upcoming 2027 elections.

The announcement was made during a public event at Zetech University, where Bahati also revealed his plans to pursue an undergraduate degree at the institution.

“You know I did not succeed as an MP but since I will be contesting for the gubernatorial seat I will come here to pursue my degree.”

Bahati’s foray into politics dates back to 2022 when he secured the Jubilee Party ticket to contest the Mathare Parliamentary seat.

However, his political aspirations faced significant challenges, leading to a heart-wrenching defeat and subsequent exit from the party.

The musician’s political journey took a tumultuous turn when he found himself embroiled in a fierce battle for the Mathare seat.

Despite his determination, Bahati faced immense pressure to withdraw from the race, with the Azimio la Umoja coalition throwing its support behind ODM’s Anthony Oluoch.

In a tearful plea, Bahati appealed to then-President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, urging them to grant the youth of the country a chance to represent Mathare.

“I respect you, my president, and I respect Raila Amollo Odinga, but please, give the youth of this country a chance. I understand there is zoning, and Mathare has been designated as an ODM stronghold, but just this once, grant the youth of this country an opportunity. Allow the people of Mathare to choose the leader they’ve always desired,” Bahati stated at the time.

Despite his impassioned pleas, Bahati ultimately finished at the bottom of the list, receiving 8,166 votes compared to Oluoch’s commanding lead of 28,098 votes.

Feeling betrayed by the outcome, Bahati retreated from the public eye for nearly two months, grappling with the disappointment of his political defeat.

During this period of reflection, he made a significant decision and left the Jubilee Party to join the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a political party associated with Deputy President William Ruto.

This move was officially confirmed by UDA’s Secretary-General, Cleophas Malala.

“Bahati mtoto wa mama has officially defected from the Jubilee party and now he is officially a member of the UDA,” he stated during a presser.
