Trans Nzoia Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) Police Commander, John Otieno Opiyo, tragically lost his life in a road accident in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County. The accident occurred while he was on duty in his rural hometown.
Just last week, Opiyo had celebrated his wedding, making the incident even more heart-wrenching. The accident took place as a matatu was traveling towards Sori from Ndhiwa. Suddenly, the matatu driver changed lanes and collided head-on with an oncoming Toyota G-Touring vehicle.
The impact caused the matatu to veer off the road to the right, facing the direction of Ndhiwa. Opiyo sustained critical injuries and was being rushed to Ndhiwa Sub-County Hospital when he tragically succumbed to his injuries. Six others were injured in the accident and were promptly taken to the hospital for medical attention.
The matatu driver, who was in serious condition, was taken to Sori Lakeside Hospital for treatment. Both vehicles involved in the accident were towed to the police station yard and detained pending inspection due to the extensive damages. Opiyo’s body was transferred to Kirindo Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya expressed his condolences and praised Opiyo’s dedication and contributions to the security sector in Trans Nzoia County. He described Opiyo as a dependable, hardworking, and dedicated officer known for his exceptional wit and skills.
According to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey 2022 (KDHS) by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), Murang’a County was ranked as having the most dangerous roads, with 365 deaths per 100,000 population.
Kisumu, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Vihiga followed closely in terms of road fatalities.
Nairobi also featured on the list with 238 fatalities per 100,000 population. The data revealed that urban areas recorded a higher number of fatalities due to traffic injuries compared to rural areas.
In response to the rising cases, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) initiated a sensitization campaign to encourage motorists to adhere to traffic laws.
