On Monday next week, President William Ruto will launch the Maisha Card, a new digital ID that aims to transform the country into a digital Unique Personal Identifier (UPI)-based national identity database.

The new digital ID, unlike Huduma Namba,  will be generated using existing databases, including those from civil registration.

As a digital representation of an individual, organization, or device, typically encompassing personal attributes, credentials, and authentication,  it will have a photo image of the applicant, an ID number, a card serial number, biometric data, biographic data, residential particulars, and advanced security elements.

Maisha Card incorporates advanced security and technological enhancements. In contrast to the existing IDs, it will also facilitate digital identification.

The card number will serve as a birth certificate number, facilitating registration in educational institutions, the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), and transitioning to an ID number once they reach 18 years of age.

The Maisha Card Personal Identification Number (PIN)  will be needed to access various government services, including, NSSF, NHIF, and NEMIS.
