Felix Odiwuor, widely recognized as Jalang’o, is a name synonymous with entertainment in Kenya. Known for his infectious humor and charismatic on-air persona, Jalang’o made a significant mark in the Kenyan radio industry.
However, his sudden departure from Milele FM in 2020 marked a turning point in his career, as he transitioned into the world of politics.
Jalang’o’s radio journey was filled with highs and lows. He was a renowned entertainer, co-presenting shows with his friend and colleague, Alex Mwakideu, at Milele FM.
The station, owned by Mediamax Network, was a popular platform for radio enthusiasts, and Jalang’o’s presence on the airwaves contributed significantly to its success.
However, a contractual dispute with the station’s management led to a surprising and abrupt exit. The disagreement centered around a proposed pay cut during a challenging period. Jalang’o, believing that his show was generating substantial income, was reluctant to accept a reduced salary.
He eventually agreed to the cut but faced another twist when the management required all employees to sign new contracts. Feeling undervalued and unappreciated, he made the life-altering decision to quit the job that had once been his passion.
In an interview with Alex Mwakideu on Radio 47, Jalang’o reflected on this pivotal moment in his career. He emphasized that the decision to leave was not easy, but it was driven by his desire for fair compensation and recognition of his contributions.
He recalled the camaraderie he shared with Mwakideu and how they had transformed Swahili radio, making their show the most listened-to program in Kenya during their time at Radio Maisha.
Jalang’o also recounted his efforts to negotiate a salary increase with Milele FM, which the management rejected, citing that he couldn’t earn more than his boss. Frustrated by the lack of recognition for his talent and dedication, he submitted his resignation letter, ultimately leading to his exit from the station.
Following his departure, Jalang’o’s career took a new direction as he joined Hot96, where he continued to captivate audiences with his charisma and humor. However, his radio career took a back seat in 2022 when he ventured into politics.
