Two suspects connected to a notorious criminal gang, suspected of robbing and violently attacking a 76-year-old woman in Serem, Vihiga County in July, have been apprehended.
The incident took a horrifying turn when the gang reportedly gang-raped and murdered the elderly woman, prompting outrage in the community.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Patrick Misiko, 36, and Christine Jerono, 46.
Their capture came about in Vihiga’s Majengo area, where they were found in possession of a mobile phone that had been reported stolen from the deceased victim during the harrowing incident.
According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the incident occurred during the late hours of the night when the criminal gang forcefully entered the elderly woman’s home.
They used blunt objects to assault her and committed the appalling acts. Following the assault, the gang made off with various items, including a gas cylinder, a solar cable, a phone, and her shopping, leaving her in immense pain.
Despite being rushed to Mbale Referral Hospital by concerned neighbors who had heard the disturbance, the woman tragically succumbed to her injuries two days later.
Local authorities took over the case, with Hamisi Sub-county detectives leading the investigation.
Crime Scene Investigators, supported by the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, initiated a forensic trail to identify and locate the perpetrators.
While Misiko and Jerono have been apprehended, the authorities are still in pursuit of the other members of the criminal gang who are evading capture
