Kenya’s cooperative movement is expected to benefit from a number of partnerships currently being sought by the Kenya Kwanza Administration in the US, this is according to Cooperatives and Micro Small and Medium Enterprises Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui.
Speaking in Atlanta, United States when presiding over the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Trustage and Africa Confederation of Co-operative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA), CS Chelugui highlighted the vibrancy of Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) in Kenya and how the country leads the rest of Africa in cooperative development.
The MoU with ACCOSCA will see the organizations train Kenyan SACCOs on governance, leadership, management, and other partnerships.
Kenya has the largest cooperative movement in Africa with six million members and an asset base of more than Ksh 810 billion.
CS Chelugui, currently visiting the US said the government is committed to the development of the sector and Kenya is ready to host the African Confederation of Cooperatives Savings 24th Annual Congres in November this year.
He also advocated for partnerships that would lead to value additions of initiatives within the Cooperative sector in a bid to empower the marginalized groups within local communities.
