A group of Azimio leaders find themselves in a tense situation as reports of police searching for them surface. These leaders went into hiding on Tuesday evening and were still missing from their usual residences as of Wednesday.
The situation escalated following the alleged detention of prominent figures, including Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Babu Owino, upon his arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport from Mombasa.
Additionally, six County Assembly Members and activists, like Calvin Okoth (also known as Gaucho), were also reportedly detained overnight.
The reason behind these detentions was linked to accusations of planning anti-government demonstrations, an allegation vehemently denied by the Azimio leaders.
However, there is uncertainty about whether these detained individuals will be brought to court, as several police stations have not recorded their bookings, as required.
The government officials claim that these actions are part of their strategy to disrupt the planned three-day protests organized by the Azimio leaders.
As tensions continue to mount, more senior Azimio leaders remain missing since Tuesday evening, further fueling concerns.
Despite search teams being dispatched to their city and upcountry homes, there has been no sign of these politicians, which include governors, senators, MPs, and MCAs.
The demonstrations orchestrated by Azimio leaders, which the government alleges were facilitated by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, have caused significant disruptions across the country.
Pockets of protests were witnessed in the city, particularly in eastlands, but anti-riot police quickly dispersed the groups, citing security concerns.
In response to their perceived vulnerability, the Azimio leaders claimed to have received credible intelligence about the police’s intention to conduct a wave of arrests and detentions targeting key figures within their ranks.
These alleged plans have further intensified the atmosphere of tension and uncertainty.
The situation remains fluid, with citizens anxiously awaiting further developments.
