New development in Mount Kenya region as Meru leaders front Governor Kiraitu Murungi to succeed President Kenyatta

As president Uhuru Kenyatta’s succession politics gains momentum, a section of political leaders from Mount Kenya East held a meeting on Saturday, June 12, 2021 in a bid to strategise themselves for 2022 general elections.

The 2022 succession politics have sparked sharp division in the mount Kenya region with a section of leaders from Mt. Kenya East, led by Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi, saying they will go it alone.

They accuse their neighbours from the Agikuyu community of selfishness after reports emerged that they are planning to field another presidential candidate after President Uhuru Kenyatta exits.

On Saturday, June 12, 2021, Meru leaders held a meeting in Nyambene and endorsed Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi as the Mount Kenya region’s leader to succeed President Uhuru once he retires in 2022.

While speaking during the meeting, the Meru Governor described Mt. Kenya East as the dog in his analogy used when hunting for presidential votes but when the election is over they are regarded a minority.

“Mimi nimechoka na siasa ya mbwa na paka…if a dog is important when you are hunting, it should also be important during eating…,” said Kiraitu, adding “we have supported Uhuru for 10 years, let us not hear of another leader from that region.” Kiraitu stated.

This comes after the National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi was installed as the region’s Kingpin at the Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga which sparked a major difference between the two GEMA communities.

“Huwezi amka kutoka kwako asubuhi ukaenda kwa msituni siku saba halafu unakuja kutuambia wewe ni kiongozi wetu…” Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru said.

“Yale madharau mnaonyesha…my friends, we are not going to be together… Hamtatukulia kwa mfuko kama njugu karanga permanently. Kama nikupasuka wacha ipasuke…,”Senator Linturi stated.

However, while attending a church service at the ACK Kanyanjeru in Kangema, Murang’a County, National Assembly Speaker justin Muturi asked the two rival groups to exercise political decorum for the interest of the region.

The Service Party of Kenya (SPK) boss Mwangi Kiunjuri dismissed the contest by various politicians to be the region’s kingpin.

“…if you want to be a kingpin it is very far from us to have a political kingpin… you must be a bold politician ready to speak about the needs of our people…,” Kiunjuri said.
