Five people died while several others were seriously injured following a road accident that happened along the Kilifi-Mombasa highway at the Mariakani area.
The yesterday’s accident was a head-on collision involving a trailer and a hearse that left two people dead on the spot while the others injured rushed to the hospital.
Reports from the area police boss Ezekiel Chepkwony, and privy to the accident indicate that the three others succumbed at the Mariakani hospital while undergoing treatment.
According to the eyewitnesses, the hearse was ferrying mourners from Kitui County where they had attended a funeral when the accident happened.
A combined effort of Police, the good samaritans, and well-wishers responded first to help rescue and take the injured to hospital.
The bodies were however transferred to the mortuary, with the investigations already launched to establish the cause of the accident.
The incident adds to the tally of the recent road accidents that have claimed lives in the Coastal area after the just recent one along Mombasa Malindi highway that claimed several lives.
At least 15 people died during the accident with the drivers of both the ill-fated vehicles included in the number.
Also dead in the then-morning crash were several Kilifi County employees on their way to work.
The accident was blamed on the ongoing road construction on the highway as the road was raised and had not been completed for months.
