Kenyan politics is never devoid of drama, and leaders from Uasin Gishu are having complaints that the rest of the country would find very strange, if not outright shocking.
While all other regions are currently angling for more representation for their populace through increased constituencies, Uasin Gishu leaders seem to be demanding the exact opposite.
So emotive has the issue of constituency allocation always been, that it is now even emerging as one of the contentious issues in the BBI process, with some areas of the view that they got a raw deal in the allocation on the new 70 proposed units.
However, in Uasin Gishu County, a section of Uasin Gishu leaders led by Governor Mandago have opposed plans by the Interior ministry to create new Divisions in the county.
Stating that it’s only IEBC that’s entitled to conduct boundaries review, the county boss added that Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i never conducted any Sensitisation before ordering some administration officials to initiate process.
Their outrage also seemed to take on a political tone, when they said that the demarcation also had a political end to it, in addition to the administrative merits.
Accusing the CS of gerrymandering, Mandago claimed that Fred Matiang’i through the Ministry of Interior is trying to divide Eldoret town so as to create a town constituency.
Many leaders from the region have protested the move too. They asserted that Eldoret is the central cornerstone political base of the region, and all the six constituencies within Uasin-Gishu county share a border with Eldoret CBD.
The move to create a new constituency on allegations of administrative delimitation, they warned, would be receiving fierce resistance from the residents of the area.
Nevertheless, the move might also have been occasioned by the tussle which has been going on for a while now between CS Matiang’I and DP Ruto who holds massive sway in the region that also happens to be his home county.
A rift first emerged between the two cabinet members after President Uhuru signed an Executive Order which transferred the functions and responsibilities previously held by DP Ruto to Matiang’i.
