President Uhuru Kenyatta is grappling with the challenge of finding a suitable successor as 2022 nears.
This comes even as the list of potential heirs to the throne continues to grow.
In Mt Kenya region where he hails from, the president has the likes of former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth, ex-Kiambu governor William Kabogo, Agriculture CS Peter Munya, Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria and Speaker Justin Muturi as potential regional successors.
Outside Mt Kenya, Uhuru is looking at KANU chairman Gideon Moi, his handshake partner Raila Odinga, ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka of Wiper and former United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) secretary-general Mukhisa Kituyi.
Recent reports indicate Uhuru’s team has been leaning towards Gideon as the potential successor, a revelation that has faced resistance from Raila’s camp and caused jitters.
