Speaker of the Senate Kenneth Lusaka has announced that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Constitutional Amendment Bill will be introduced in the Senate for on Thursday
The Senate Speaker has stated that the Senate Business Committee have decided in a meeting held on Wednesday March 3, 2021 that the BBI bill be introduced to the Senate on Thursday.
“I direct that the clerk of the House ensure there are sufficient copies of the Bill in the form that was presented to the county assemblies by the IEBC,” Lusaka said.
The speaker also ordered Justice and Legal Affairs Committee to hold a joint meeting with their National Assembly counterpart to conduct public participation.
This comes after National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi had also delivered similar directive on Tuesday, meaning that the Bill will be introduced in the two Houses concurrently.
On Tuesday, Muturi said the House Business Committee set the Thursday date as the bill does not require the 14 day period applicable to other bills.
“It does not apply to a bill that has originated from another House,” Muturi said.
So far a total of 42 County Assemblies have approved the BBI bill surpassing the threshold of 24 County Assemblies required by the law to pass the Bill to Parliament for a referendum.
