KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion withdraws teachers’ strike notice

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion on Friday, February 26, 2021 issued a statement over the planned teachers strike.

KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion has withdrawn the teachers strike notice that they had issued two weeks ago.

This was revealed through a letter that was written by Sossion to the Teachers Service Commission CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia in which he said that they have withdrawn the strike notice based on the Salaries and Remuneration Commission’s (SRC) response on teachers’ new salary deal.

In a letter to the Teachers Service Commission CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia on Friday, February 26, 2021 KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion said: “Note that we had already registered a trade dispute with the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Labour. However, based on the commission’s response citing the process of concluding internal consultations with SRC, we hereby retract our letter to the CS and urge that you give strict and clear timelines of undertaking the salary negotiations.”

However, the Kenya National Union of Teachers’ (KNUT) move entirely depend on the advisory from the SRC in which they requested to be given a strict and clear timelines of undertaking the salary negotiations.

This comes as the SRC is currently undertaking job evaluation exercise to inform its third remuneration review cycle in the public service. Due to the ongoing evaluation exercise, the SRC guides that the negotiation parameters for the period 2021-2025 shall be issued once the ongoing job evaluation exercise is concluded.
