Top presenter mocks dead Turkana student who died after drinking sanitizer

As the country continues to reel from the tragic news from Lodwar of the high school students who ingested a sanitizer, causing one to loose his life while others lost their sight, to one morning show presenter, this was not only hilarious, but also something to crack up her listeners morning and coin one-liners. The incident, which reeked of insensitivity and unprofessionalism, once again brought to the fore the dwindling ethical standards within the media industry, and the need for enhanced self-regulatory measures to ensure decency, if not excellence.

Regina Manyara, popularly known online as Ray Manyara presents KBC’s top morning show Good Morning Kenya, alongside co-presenters Jain Wambui and Orangi.

On Monday, they were presenting their morning show when they came across the Turkana news item about the students from Kaputir high school who drank a sanitizer which ended up killing one of them.

Ray then began making fun of the victims and laughing at how ridiculous it was for one’s death to be from ingesting a sanitizer. As if this wasn’t enough, she went as far as making fun of the grieving parents, wondering out loud what the parents say when someone asks them what killed their son.

The student of Kaputir Mixed Secondary School in Turkana South sub-county died while three others lost their sight after they consumed sanitiser.
It’s reported that Sospeter Lokora, 20, died while others lost their sight after consuming the toxic drink within the school compound. The deceased was a Form Four student.

According to the police report, the deceased shared the lethal drink with his classmates on February 8, but immediately felt unwell. He was rushed to Kaputir Dispensary, but died two hours later.

The body was moved to Lodwar Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem. It remains unclear whether there were more toxic chemicals from the school laboratory that were used to make the drink. Turkana South Sub County Police Commander Robert Kibuchi said investigations have been launched into the incident.

One of the victims said Lokora was one of his best friends and that he could not read any mischief after he invited them to partake of the drink.
