Five people died on the spot while four others were critically injured in yesterday’s night accident in the Tharaka Nithi blackspot Tharaka Nithi County, one of the most dangerous zones in the area.
According to the rescue team patron Alex Mugambi, the 9 PM accident involved a passenger service vehicle and a truck that collided head-on.
The truck, which was ferrying milk, was traveling from Meru County while the PSV was from Chuka on its way to Chogoria when the accident happened.
Speaking to journalists, the owner of the PSV confirmed that the accident happened and among the dead was the driver of his Matatu.
“I was contacted and told that one of my vehicles had been involved in an accident. When I got to the scene, I was told that there were five passengers and a driver who all died on the spot,” the owner of the PSV told reporters.
Investigations have since been launched to establish the exact cause of the accident, with the brake failure from the truck already speculated to be the cause.
The injured four were rushed to the nearby hospital while the bodies of the five were taken to the mortuary for preservation.
Mugambi urged the road users to be very vigilant especially at night due to the slippery nature of the road during the rainy season.
He also urged them to maintain reasonable speed to be able to control their vehicles in case of an emergency.
The accident comes barely a week after the Soysambu accident along the Nakuru- Nairobi highway near Gilgil’s St Mary’s hospital that claimed nine lives.
“The matatu has been reduced to a shell and bodies are lying all over,” a witness told reporters.
