Deputy President William Ruto’s men have allegedly approached Kakamega Governor Oparanya for a possible coalition between him and the second in command ahead of 2022 general elections. The team tried to convince Oparanya to ditch ODM party, where he currently serves as the Deputy party leader, and become the party leader of the People’s Democratic Party.
The county head was beseeched to defect from ODM and build his own brand in PDP. According to his suitors, his defection would help him bargain his political future after he fails to clinch the ODM presidential ticket. The Ruto handlers exuded confidence that the Kakamega governor will be rigged out in the ODM primaries and that he should now consider ditching the Orange party for his own good.
The former chair of the Council of Governors has been coordinating ODM’s campaigns in the Matungu constituency by-election. Oparanya is alleged to have admitted that ANC candidate Peter Nabulindo is his favoured candidate. Plans to bring Oparanya and Ruto together have been in top gear since January this year. Ruto seeks to woo the Luhya vote through an influential leader from the region. The DP already has a significant number of MPs from the Western region in his fold.
