Details of Bonchari MP’s last minutes alive

The Bonchari Member of Parliament John Oroo Oyioka passed on yesterday February 15, 2021, in the evening at the Aga Khan hospital in Kisumu where he had been taken ill for some time.

The legislator was first admitted to a private hospital in Kisumu two weeks ago after his health deteriorated before he was transferred to the Aga Khan.

He had been admitted to the same facility mid-last year after suffering a mild stroke and was later transferred to Nairobi for specialized treatment.

Oroo has been missing in a number of key functions in Kisii County, most notably the Shujaa day celebrations attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta and the burials of Nyamira governor John Nyagarama and former cabinet minister Simeon Nyachae, that raised concerns about his whereabouts.

The lawmaker was serving his second term in Parliament having served for a short period of 6 months in 2014 before appellate court nullified his first term election, after a successful appeal by former MP Zebedeo Opore.

This was after the High court had declared him the validly elected MP for Bonchari in the 2013 general elections, after a successful petition after IEBC had on 4th March 2013 declared Zebedeo Opore the Winner.

In that year’s election, Opore had garnered 8,992 votes while Oroo was second with 8,987 votes, Charles Onyancha emerged third with 6,897 votes.

Following the Court of appeal decision, a fresh by-election was ordered in the Constituency in which he later lost to Opore.

During his second term  in 2017 Oyioka was elected to the Parliament on a People’s Democratic Party ticket (PDP)

Before venturing into active politics, Oroo was formerly a secondary school teacher, and later also served as a senior official in the Ministry of Education before his retirement.
