Muranga County governor Mwangi wa Iria has admitted that indeed some counties in central Kenya are becoming Ruto strongholds among them,Murang’a County. The county chief also revealed that some Mt Kenya governors and other elected leaders from the Mt Kenya are unhappy that some key and influential politicians have been sidelined in the Building Bridges Initiative campaigns, stoking disquiet amongst them.
Wa Iria opined that the BBI steering team from the region was randomly picked by some Jubilee operatives with the help of Interior Permanent Secretary Karanja Kibicho. The county head claims that nobody consulted governors about the BBI team spearheading campaigns in the vast Mt Kenya region. According to him the selections were made with a political agenda ostensibly to punish some of them.
According to Mwangi wa Iria, the ground is increasingly becoming hostile for BBI because the people do not have access to information on how the document would turn around their lives. Wa Iria’s sentiments are in tandem with the revelations of Muranga senator Irungu Kangata and Kirinyaga county boss Anne Waiguru.
Irungu Kangata, in a controversial letter addressed to President Uhuru Kenyatta, claimed that the BBI report was unpopular in the region and would receive little support if subjected to a referendum. Waiguru also took issue with the currently constituted BBI team in the region. The former Devolution CS was left out of the new team that will be tasked with campaigning for the document.
