Kitui governor, and Kalonzo’s bitter kamba-land rival, Charity Ngilu, has put a fresh new twist on the Kalonzo Yatta farm scandal after a potentially explosive exposé yesterday, where she revealed that back when she was CS in charge of lands, so suspicious and fishy was Kalonzo’s Yatta farm that she even went as far as opening investigations into it.
Before this damning piece of evidence that has now been brought to light by none other than the former CS of lands herself, the feeling towards Ruto’s accusation of land grabbing by the former Vice-president has been that of disinterest. This is mainly because, first, Kalonzo Musyoka isn’t known as one to get entangled in scandalous dealings, and two, this was the first time many Kenyans are even hearing of such a claim. However, with Ngilu’s latest statement concerning the row, people are bound to start attaching some interest in to the entire thing.
It is, nevertheless, worth noting that after Ngilu’s shocking revelation, she went ahead to state categorically that even after her investigations into the whole saga, she found everything was in order, and that in fact, the entire process of the acquisition of the property was open and above board. That Ngilu was busy investigating a political adversary during her time in office is also bound to open a Pandora’s box. According to the ethics laws that guide the conduct of state officers, an officer is supposed to carry out his, or her duties, without fear, favour or bias, and CSs even go as far as taking an oath to this effect.
It should be remembered that president Kenyatta’s cabinet has been riddled with accusations of ministers using their positions to fight political battles, and most of these claims have come from none other than people from the president’s own party. Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’I has been accused of taking advantage of his post to use police to selectively persecute some political players. This has mainly been claimed by members of tanga tanga, a renegade group in the president’s Jubilee party. Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru has also, in the past, accused Interior PS Karanja Kibicho of using his government position to prepare for entry into Kirinyaga county politics.
