With political realignments shaping up, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is crafting well-oiled machinery behind the scenes, backed by well-connected billionaires and politicians who wield strong influence across the nation ahead of 2022.
The ODM party leader is leaving no stone unturned in preparation for what many believe will be the ultimate battle in 2022 in which he could run against Deputy President William Ruto who has already declared interest in succeeding his boss, President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Riding on the handshake wave, Raila has been working tirelessly to bring Kenyans together, including political leaders from across the political divide in what his critics and many believe is preparation for 2022 despite Odiinga clarifying that his focus is uniting the country and is yet to declare interest in the 2022 polls.
Ali Hassan Joho
The ODM Deputy party leader not only enjoys a national appeal and is capable of mobilizing votes across the nation, but is also the undisputed sultan of Coast politics.
Popularly called 001, Joho has worked his way to the top and endeared himself to the ODM party leader to a level where he has access to some of the best-kept secrets. This was brought to light when Joho and Junet Mohamed boarded a chartered flight to see the ODM party leader in Dubai when he was admitted in hospital for a minor surgery.
Having Joho in his corner also assures him of benefitting from the governor’s financial muscle. In the 2007 pentagon, Tourism CS Najib Balala was the pentagon member from the Coast region.
The Kakamega governor is a staunch Raila Odinga ally who the ODM party leader depends on to stay ahead of the race in Western Province and bag the populous Luhya community vote.
Oparanya has proved dependable over the years, consistently wrestling the region out of the hands of Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula to deliver votes for Odinga. Mudavadi was the pentagon member from the region in 2007.
The National Assembly Minority Whip has permanently cemented his place in former Prime Minister’s heart and has emerged as a key member of his inner circle.
He is hardly a missing figure in pertinent meetings and functions held by Mr Odinga and was in fact part of the key players behind the ODM leader’s truce talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta that birthed the handshake.
The witty MP is among the ‘RDF-Raila Defense Forces’ capable of taking DP Ruto and his Tanga Tanga brigade and silencing the propaganda spewed by the DP’s camp.
Ledama Olekina and Gideon Moi
Rift Valley is a region where anyone keen on winning the 2022 contest cannot ignore. William Ruto is currently the undisputed king of the region. Keen on wrestling the region from Ruto’s grasp, Odinga is understood to be working closely with Gideomn Moi to get a share of the Kalenjin vote-block.
Fiery Senator Ledama Ole Kina who has emerged as a front-runner among the Masaai community is also expected to lead the drive for Odinga.
Peter Kenneth and David Murathe
Alliances with political rivals, friends and foes (politically) could count heavily in the 2022 contest. Aware pof this, Raila Odinga is keen on forging new alliances with leaders from Mount Kenya region that has rejected Odinga at the ballot on multiple occasions. Riding on the handshake and the BBI wave, Odinga has roped in David Murathe and Peter Kenneth to make inroads into the region.
On hand to help the duo are Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and Maina Kamanda, backed by a host of legislators.
