KEMRI innovates COVID-19 testing kits, makes Kenya first African country to kick off mass testing

    President Uhuru Kenyatta

The country will be the first in Africa to embark on mass testing for the coronavirus. Kenya is about to start coronavirus mass testing with potential to get results for at least 35,000 samples in 24 hours courtesy of our own scientists at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).

The innovative scientists at KEMRI found a way to engineer conversion of existing machines used to test for TB, Avian Flu and HIV to be able to test for coronavirus earning them accolades from WHO.

Kenya has several Cobas 6800 and 8800 machines as well as GeneXpert machines for TB which are located at Government testing facilities and KEMRI centres across the country.
