It is a public knowledge that ODM leader and DP William Ruto are arch political rivals who do not see eye to eye on a number of national and political issues. However, this could soon come to an end following revelations that DP William Ruto’s camp is secretly reaching out to ODM leader Raila Odinga, for a possible truce and a subsequent arrangement of working together from 2020.
After attending same function in Homabay with Raila Odinga, Ruto’s man and Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen is said to have met three prominent leaders from Nyanza and have them play as the link between his boss, Ruto and Odinga.
After the 2017 general elections, there was a widely believed perception that Raila’s political life had come to an end, and leaders, especially those on DP Ruto’s camp believed 2022 dream would be an easy ride with Odinga out of the way. In their mind, with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s endorsement and Raila Odinga out of the way, William Ruto would easily sail through to State House without any barriers.
This was just a pipe dream. Raila Odinga made an abrupt political move, something that thew DP Ruto out of balance and upset the Jubilee succession plan. The handshake ruined Ruto’s plans and ever since, he has been on the defensive, fighting both his boss Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.
Even though he has put up a spirited fight against the two, Ruto has been reduced to a heckler in government who spends his tie convening political meetings and attending rallies. His influence in government has been diluted by Interior CS Fred Matiangis’s overbearing shadow on government ministries.
Ruto’s men believe 2020 is the year to change tact. By reaching out to Raila Odinga, the DP is trying to make amends and have a back up plan if President Uhuru does not stick to his 2022 pledge. However, there is one problem. Raila and Uhuru have such a close relationship that it would be an uphill task having Odinga turn his back on the president given the weight of their joint BBI project which they have vowed to see through its conclusion.
