The Kenya ports Authority (KPA) have disregarded a command given by AU Representative of Infrustructure, Raila Odinga that required them to stop dredging with immediate effect.
Speaking at the scene of the Likoni ferry tragedy on October 5, the former Prime Minister ordered for the immediate stoppage of the dredging exercise at the port of Mombasa saying the exercise was hindering the retrieval mission at Likoni.
According to him, the dredging was the cause of pollution in the ocean’s sea bed, that’s responsible for the poor visibility experienced by divers. ”I want to give an order here that the dredging works stop immediately so that those who are working here can work without interference,” said Raila.
However in a show of disdain coupled with utter disregard, the Kenya Ports Authority are said to have resumed the dredging exercise early on Sunday morning, stamping business as usual.
Kenyans on the other hand banked surprise at the order given so brusquely. To some, Hon Raila lacked the power and authority to give orders in matters pertaining to public work and servants.
