Convicted women in the FGM case

Five women face three years jail term for getting themselves into circumcision willingly.

The convicted ladies pleaded guilty for getting involved in the Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) at Kiagu Village in Central Imenti Constituency.

Names of the ladies convicted Charity Karimi, Charity Muthoni, Winfred Kawira, Florence Kiende, and Caroline Wanja who appeared before Githongo Resident Magistrate Evelyn Wachira Ndegwa.

The court was informed that the five women planned to undergo the FGM service on different dates this year.

P3 form was introduced by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to confirm the incident occurred before the court.

Florence Kiende underwent the procedure on July 14, 2019, Caroline Wanja on August 29, Charity Karimi on July 14, Charity Muthoni on August 28 and Winfred Kawira on July 14.

The five women were sentenced to three years jail term or take the option of paying a fine of Ksh 200,000.

John Tarus, Imenti Central Sub-County Commander issued a stern warning to women seeking FGM service across the county emphasizing the practice is outdated.
