The narrative that the top three political families in Kenya, labelled ‘dynasties’ cannot support anyone outside their circle is being dismantled by the support CS Fred Matiang’i has got from the Kenyatta and Odinga families.Dr Matiang’i, who does not come from a prominent family has worked his way through the ranks in government and won confidence, that today he is the country’s unofficial Prime Minister.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has transferred almost half of his presidential duties, in the executive to the CS, who is labeled a ‘Super CS’ because of his track record and meticulous work in every ministry that he is assigned. Hailing from Nyamira county, the Interior CS has no political background considering he was plucked straight from the academia, in the University of Nairobi where he was a lecturer for many years.
On the other hand, AU Envoy Raila Odinga, unlike previously, has grown very close to the CS and it is said the ODM leader could be preparing him for future political responsibilities. Nyamira county is the bedrock of ODM and as a native of the county, it is believed, if Matiangi were to venture into elective politics, he is likely to vie on an ODM ticket.
“Matiang’i is my son and I know he deserves the best. Go slow, I know how to plan on this,” Raila said in Kisii on Friday, during the burial of former area MP Hezron Manduku. Leaders present at the funeral pleaded with the former premier to throw his weight behind Matiang’i in 2022.
The Interior CS’s rising star is causing panic in DP Ruto’s camp who have shaped up the 2022 duel as a contest between the hustlers vs dynasties. If the two big political families decide to throw their weight behind Matiang’i, from a peasant background, it is likely to complicate matters for the DP.
