The declaration of the Kibra seat as vacant by the speaker of the national assembly Hon. Justin Muturi, has attracted a record number of candidates from various political parties. The Orange Democratic Movement party seeks to retain the seat following the death of the area member of parliament Hon.Ken Okoth.
Among candidates seeking ODM nominations include former Kasarani MP, Hon.Elizabeth Ongoro; Imran Okoth, the younger brother to the late Ken Okoth and Benson Musungu, ODMs National Youth coordinator, among others.
It’s believed that Eliud Owalo, the former PA to H.E Raila Amollo Odinga is interested to vie for the seat on ANC ticket. Barely a month ago, he was appointed by Hon. Musalia Mudavadi as one of the top ANC strategists ahead of the 2022 general elections.
Benson Musungu, perhaps one of the most loyal ODM diehards has been with the party since he was 24 years old. His commitment and dedication to ODM leadership, its agenda for the youth, women and Kenyans of all walks of life is unmatched by any of his fellow ODM contesters. To this end, its fair to say that Benson Musungu has sacrificed a lot for the party. He is a man cut from a different kind of cloth. At a time when the youth of today will do anything to get attention of the highest bidder, Benson Musungu remained loyal to H.E. Raila Amollo Odinga and his party ODM.
Born and raised in Laini saba, he attended Glory secondary school, Laini Saba, both located in Kibra constituency, the bedrock of ODM support in Nairobi. It’s fair to say that Benson Musungu understands life in Kibra much better than those whose only view of Kibra is via Langata road. Benson Musungu is Kibra through and through; and Kibra is Benson Musungu. He is not a Johnny come late wonna be here nor there, who only show up every five years to ask for votes and disappear into the comfort of their lofty consultative offices. Musungu has lived in Kibra and understands the challenges affecting Kibras residents. As a matter of fact, he is a living manifesto, a byproduct education, patience and hard work. A clear manifestation of how those factors can impact a society
Kenyan politics is always unfair to people with less privileged backgrounds, who don’t have the connections to the powers that be. Every dream and aspiration of such people is always put in the back banner and those with deep pockets always find a seat on the table. Such are the challenges of beginners in competitive politics. If we truly believe in youth empowerment and the famous cliché, that youth are the leaders of tomorrow, then ODM should let Kibras tomorrow be today by nominating Benson Musungu as the next member of Parliament.
It requires a lot of courage to declare interest in such a highly sought contest. Sometimes one can get discouraged; but had Obama followed the advice of those who said he was not ready for prime-time politics, we would have missed out on the first black president.
Benson Musungus declaration of interest to represent Kibra in Parliament continues to garner a lot of support. He is the next best Member of Parliament for Kibra and be deserves his party’s nomination.
ODM has to demonstrate its commitment to the youth agenda of this country by nominating Benson Musungu, as the next MP for Kibra. The party should lead by example and not by leap service. It’s imperative that ODM walks the talk and ensure that youth representation just like women representation takes a central priority in delivery of its agenda. For ODM, there is no better chance to prove that loyalty, commitment and dedication is a virtue and can be rewarding, than supporting Benson Musungu.
