The first quarter the tourism industry witnessed a slight drop in the number of international tourists arrival in Kenya something that is slowly changing and ministry of Tourism indicates a possible ten percent increase as compared to the year 2018.
The key pointer to this growth is attributed to the fact that the US market was performing well and grew steadily by 9.4%. The direct flights to the US would be a great pointer as to why there is steady and substantial positive impact on tourism. Other markets such as France, Uganda and China have equally contributed immensely when it comes to the tourism sector.
Najib Balala was speaking at the launch of the Kenya Tourism Satellite Account a platform which will aid the ministry to ascertain the tourism sector’s total contribution to the larger economy. Balala pointed out how the ministry is positioning strategically so as to tap into the Russian and Indian markets. Other Market that will work to the advantage of Kenya is the North Africa which for a while now has suffered political instability due to the rise of Arab Spring.
The current political stability and heightened security are expected to support the industry’s perfomance going forward. The Dusit attack back in January could the reason as to why visitors numbers from the South Africa, UK,Germany, Italy and probably India dropped in the first half.
