Deputy President William Ruto is finally realizing he cannot survive country’s politics for the next three years without going back to Raila Odinga. The realization that Kenyan politics revolve around the ODM leader plus the fact that more than half the government is being controlled by Raila may have been key in Ruto’s change of heart.
” I would like to tell my brother Prime Minister Raila Odinga, I assure you we are going to work together under the leadership of President Uhuru Kenyatta to ensure the country is united,” the DP said in Bomet on Friday, during the funeral service of Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso.
Over the last couple of months, the DP has grown isolated in government with both the president and the cabinet. Ironically, Cabinet Secretaries have gotten closer to Raila Odinga who is not in government. The AU Envoy is believed to be right at the center of state power something which has been rattling the DP and his allies.
President Uhuru’a war on corruption, supported by Raila has been rubbing Ruto the wrong way, with him claiming the anti graft crusade is targeted at him. He has been claiming it is a ploy to muddy his name ahead of 2022. When Finance CS Henry Rotich was arrested and charged of corruption, the DP was shaken. There are claims from a number of highly placed sources all Cabinet Secretaries inclined to the DP are being targeted for removal.
To avoid the continued isolation and opening a wider war front, Ruto now is changing tact. His approval of Raila Odinga and the handshake after months of fighting a losing battle opposing the truce points to a subdued individual. It is a perfect ‘if you cant beat them, join them’ scenario.
Whether his Bomet remarks were just for the moment and a political posturing will be proved in coming days.
