All along, Deputy President William Ruto has been opposed to any plans to ammend the Constitution. His reason has been, country cannot create extra seats for election losers through a referendum. However, this has changed following the successful verification of 1M signatures presented by the Thirdway Party.
Those within DP Ruto’s circle believe having a referendum is inevitable given the support it has from Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga as well as a host of over politicians. Therefore, they have no option but to back the calls, lest they be swept away by the wave. However, the DP has chosen to support Punguza Mizigo, buy virtue of it not having extra positions for those the DP calls elections losers.
Kipchumba Murkomen, a DP Ruto right hand man says they may be forced to support Punguza Mizigo bill because it looks lucrative.
”In the current context of what we are going through, the constitutional issues we are dealing with in the Senate and counties, Aukot’s proposals are extremely attractive to those who support devolution, if it is that attractive, there is high probability that his proposal will pass,” Mr Murkomen said.“
” Because of the provision on strengthening Senate and strengthening devolution and guaranteeing 35 per cent going to counties again that is extremely attractive to Senate there is high chances senators might welcome his proposals based on the current struggle we have had for the last six years,” he added.
This revelation by Murkomen points a likelihood of DP Ruto throwing his weight behind the bill.
