Plans to rename City Stadium to Joe Kadenge Stadium have been finalized, according to ODM leader Raila Odinga. Raila, who was speaking on Tuesday evening at Nairobi’s Charter Hall during a fundraiser for the departed football legend said he made the request to President Uhuru Kenyatta who accepted.
Raila said both him and President Uhuru Kenyatta have formally spoken to Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to make sure the change of name happens as soon as possible. Joe Kadenge passed on aged 84 at Nairobi Hospital after battling diabetes for years.
”Joe was a legend. And that is why I proposed to President Uhuru Kenyatta on the possibility or renaming City Stadium in his honor ,” Raila said.
” We both have spoken with Sonko and has agreed to fast track the process,” he added.
City Stadium will now be called Joe Kadenge Stadium and there will be a series of events at the venue to commemorate the change of name in honor of the departed football legend.
Raila was speaking during a fundraiser to offset the funeral expenses and medical bills for the late football icon. Odinga gave a contribution of Sh 1M and presented President Uhuru Kenyatta’s contribution of similar amount. Governor Mike Sonko also sent Sh 1M. Other leaders present were Musalia Mudavadi who contributed Sh 150, 000, COTU Boss Francis Atwoli sent Sh 200, 000, MP Timothy Wanyonyi (SH 100, 000), Nairobi Women Rep Esther Passaris ( Sh 50,000), ODM SG Edwin Sifuna (Sh 50,000) and Makadara MP Aladwa (Sh 50, 000).
Raila also announced following the order by President Uhuru Kenyatta that Kadenge’s house in South B be given to him, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko had agreed to a speedy processing of paperwork to ensure the house is handed over to his family.
”It was Joe’s wish that the house in Mariakani estate be handed over to him and that wish was granted by the President,” Raila said.Joe Kadenge is set to be laid to rest at his home in Vihiga County on 22nd this month.
