Tough Battle Looms at Safaricom as Kenyans Debate Who Between Sylvia Mulinge and Michael Joseph Should Replace Bob Collymore

Michael Joseph

Moments after former Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph made a comeback in an acting capacity following the death of Bob Collymore- social media has gone into pandemonium.

The telco announced on Tuesday that Joseph will hold the position until the Safaricom Board makes communication on a permanent appointment.

“The board is confident that during this transition, Mr Joseph will provide the necessary guidance and leadership to the company and its employees,” Company Secretary Kathryne Maundu said in a statement.

Joseph is a former CEO of Safaricom and the current chairman of the board of Kenya Airways.

Collymore, who passed on Monday morning after battling cancer, took over from Joseph as Safaricom CEO in November 2010.

Joseph,67, joined the Safaricom board on September 8, 2008 and is employed by Vodafone Group Services Limited as the Director of Mobile Money.

He is also Vodafone’s Strategic Advisor appointed to the Boards of Vodacom Group South Africa, Vodacom Tanzania, Vodacom Mozambique and Safaricom Limited in Kenya.

He was the CEO of Safaricom Limited from July 2000 when the company was re-launched as a joint-venture between Vodafone UK and Telkom Kenya until his retirement in November 2010.

During his tenure, he steered the company from a subscriber base of less than 20,000 to over 16.71 million subscribers.

Joseph, a U.S. citizen, has a B. Sc. (cum laude) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cape Town and is a member of the I.E.E.E. and I.E.E. (U.K.)

But many Kenyans feel he is too incompetent to head Safaricom and are advocating for Sylvia Mulinge.
