Moments after former Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph made a comeback in an acting capacity following the death of Bob Collymore- social media has gone into pandemonium.
The telco announced on Tuesday that Joseph will hold the position until the Safaricom Board makes communication on a permanent appointment.
“The board is confident that during this transition, Mr Joseph will provide the necessary guidance and leadership to the company and its employees,” Company Secretary Kathryne Maundu said in a statement.
Joseph is a former CEO of Safaricom and the current chairman of the board of Kenya Airways.
Collymore, who passed on Monday morning after battling cancer, took over from Joseph as Safaricom CEO in November 2010.
Joseph,67, joined the Safaricom board on September 8, 2008 and is employed by Vodafone Group Services Limited as the Director of Mobile Money.
He is also Vodafone’s Strategic Advisor appointed to the Boards of Vodacom Group South Africa, Vodacom Tanzania, Vodacom Mozambique and Safaricom Limited in Kenya.
He was the CEO of Safaricom Limited from July 2000 when the company was re-launched as a joint-venture between Vodafone UK and Telkom Kenya until his retirement in November 2010.
During his tenure, he steered the company from a subscriber base of less than 20,000 to over 16.71 million subscribers.
Joseph, a U.S. citizen, has a B. Sc. (cum laude) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cape Town and is a member of the I.E.E.E. and I.E.E. (U.K.)
But many Kenyans feel he is too incompetent to head Safaricom and are advocating for Sylvia Mulinge.
Michael Joseph's appointment is a step back.🙄
Surely Sylvia mulinge deserved this chance to prove herself…

Michael Joseph isn’t a transformative leader. He was at the right place at the right time as 1st CEO of Safaricom.. MJ has neither charisma nor humility of Bob Collymore .. His failure to turn around Kenya Airways shows his ability .. Sylvia Mulinge deserves to be appointed CEO.

So far Michael Joseph is:
> The Chairman of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
> Chancellor of Maseno University.
> Chairman of the Board of Kenya Airways.
> Interim Safaricom CEO.
Talk of the luckiest man in Kenya!

Safaricom has an obvious CEO that they had tried to lend Tanzania's Vodacom, Sylvia Mulinge 🤷🏾♂️. Why are you putting a man on interim while you have the right woman for the job? 🤔

Bob Collymore's body hasn't even been buried yet Michael Joseph has replaced him as the CEO. People are now even fighting between Michael Joseph & Sylvia Mulinge who should have taken over but not asking how Bob's family is doing. Always put family first. It is that important. 🙏
