The growing differences between Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka go beyond mere Ukambani succession politics. After days of hitting at Kalonzo Musyoka, allies of the Wiper leader have come out to strongly defend the region’s political kingpin, calling Kibwana a bitter man for making his differences with Kalonzo personal.
The leaders have told Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana to shut up and stop engaging in badmouthing the former Vice President with his political opponents to sabotage and wreck his 2022 presidential bid.On Sunday Kalonzo and the Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi dismissed Prof Kibwana and other critics as mischievous characters who wanted to auction him (Kalonzo) to their political gods for their self-esteem.
Early last year, leaders aligned to the DP wanted Kalonzo Musyoka to join their camp, with the assumption that the former VP and Raila’s running mate in the 2017 polls would buy their narrative of ‘hustlers vs dynasty’ debate. They had hoped it would be an easier fete to have Kalonzo in their camp because they perceived him to not have any ideological inclination to families they said had been ruling the country.
Person tasked with making sure Kalonzo Musyoka joined the DP’s camp was the Makueni governor. The plans hit a dead end. Kalonzo Musyoka found out the plans to auction him and decided to severe links with Kivutha Kibwana an the Muungano Party. It is at this point that trouble started.
“Some of them have become very bitter after realising the person they wanted to auction to their political gods has set his sights elsewhere,” Kalonzo said in Kitui over the weekend, a subtle attack to Kibwana. The differences between Kalonzo and Kibwana have widened to the point where the Makueni governor has been bragging how he was the one responsible for Kalonzo Musyoka’s selection as Raila Odinga’s running mate in 2017, demanding the Wiper leader to respect him.
”We are not refusing this Wiper-Muungano divorce but even if I was in Muungano I would have retained my position since the people of Makueni in 2013 elected me due to the trust they had in me. If I hadn’t joined him, Wiper party would not have secured even a single governor position in Ukambani. I helped Kalonzo secure a running mate position in NASA to prevent Musalia Mudavadi from sealing it,” said Kibwana.
