Gusii leaders have confessed if ODM leader Raila Odinga were to declare his intentions to run for presidency for the fifth time, the region will back him and vote him to the last man. They affirm Raila Odinga will get unconditional support in 2022 polls from Gusii region should he chose to run in 2022.
“I am still convinced that our boss Raila Odinga is the best to take over. In the last few years, he has show exceptional humility and statesmanship. He’s the best suited to take over from Uhuru,” said Nyamira Governor John Nyangarama over the weekend.
He says the Gusii region is Raila’s strong hold and will continue to be so until another leader emerges from the region or the larger Nyanza region, who commands respect and following like Odinga does.
“Since 2007, we have always supported Raila as Abagusii. We shall do it again. However, we need to spread out wings to other regions to make this possible,” he said.In the last three elections, Mr Odinga has won both in Kisii and Nyamira Counties with an approximated voter population of 800,000 people.
Even though in the 2017 elections Jubilee tried to make inroads in the region, ODM ended up scooping all the major seats in both Kisii and Nyamira counties, affirming Raila Odinga’s unbridled support in the two counties.
DP Ruto has been making several trips in the Gusii region but he has not been able to achieve any positive outcome.Instead, politicians backing him from the region have withdrawn their support citing hostile reception and bad blood they have against Ruto. MP Richard Onyonka, who was the Tanga Tanga chair in the Gusii region switched camp late last month to throw his weight behind Raila Odinga.
