August 15, 2015- Meru was on stand still. Social media went berserk as photos of 4 choppers that had landed at Dr. Mwiti’s home where a group of in-laws had gone to pay dowry surfaced on line.
Thanks to the affluent man from the Lakeside City, one Jared Otieno- Meru town was ‘a hotbed’ of expensive cars as his moneyed friends escorted him to his fiancée’s family home.
Jared had gone to seal the deal with Kendi Mwiti’s parents just two months after he spent Ksh15 million for an extravagant pre-wedding party in Ndhiwa- Homa bay County.
The party was a carnival of expensive delights, and even the region’s political elite were in attendance.
Jared went all out for the ceremony, and he even hired pricey corporate MC Jalango to host the function. Speaking to a local daily, Jalango said that Jared’s party brought Ndhiwa to a standstill.
“I trust this will be the wedding of the year. You should have seen the convoy of 18 Range Rovers and the Porsche Cayenne Jared was driven in. Literally, Ndhiwa came into a standstill. All hotels had been booked by the Meru team and we had to sleep in the cars. The cheapest drink was Black Label,” Jalang’o, the MC of the day, told a local daily.
But today morning , Otieno was arrested during a raid at his palatial home in Karen by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation.
The arrest is part of the ongoing crackdown on fake gold merchants ordered by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Detectives also towed away his two luxurious cars, a Porsche and Bentley, that were parked at his newly acquired home.
Detectives had on Wednesday evening camped at two houses in Karen and Lavington but were not able to get him.
A detective privy to the matter said that Mr Otieno recently bought the palatial house in Karen at Sh110 million.
He was arrested after a Chinese national claimed Otieno and others had conned him Sh300 million in pretense they would supply him with gold. The Chinese national complained to the officers in Nairobi.
Kinoti said Otieno was wanted and his team had been looking for him since last week.
“He has been arrested and we are looking for more suspects in this issue,” he said.It is not the first time Otieno is being arrested over similar claims.
Kinoti said several suspects who are now on the run had been mentioned in the issue and are being sought. He added Otieno had been identified in CCTV footage confiscated from a house in Kileleshwa area on Monday as the owner of the premises and the main driver of the business.
Detectives from the cybercrime unit are studying CCTV footage confiscated from a house where fake gold was seized on Monday
Police say they suspect the suspects are engaging in cyber-related crimes within and outside the country hence the country at risk.
