President Uhuru Kenyatta has rewarded former MPs who have stood with him against political attacks and onslaught from Tanga Tanga. In fresh appointments made last evening, the head of state is out of his comfort zone and is keen on punishing DP Ruto for not reading from the same script.Team Kieleweke has registered a major win from the plum appointments, where a number of them have been tapped to run key State institutions once gazetted.
Rebel MPs in the Team Tanga Tanga are in trouble as President Uhuru has appointed their rivals from the 2017 polls to parastatals and state boards, something which points to a strategy for them making a comeback in 2022.
Some of the notable appointees are former Dagoreti South MP Dennis Waweru,Jamleck Kamau, key members of Kieleweke group. Waweru has been appointed as Chairman to Kenya Investment Authority while Kamau is appointed to chair Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority.
Out of the 82 fresh appointments made by the president, it is apparent there were no consultations between him and his deputy. On the contrary, he has kicked out those allied to Ruto, and as is most cases, refused to renew their contracts.
However, Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka are also major beneficiaries in the appointments. Their close associates have been rewarded, thanks to the handshake and strong support to the president. Kalonzo’s ally and former Governor Julius Malombe (chair Kenya Water Towers Agency), Nation Group Editorial Director Mutuma Mathiu (chair Kenya Copyright Board) and reappointment of former Machakos County Speaker Bernard Mung’ata (ICDC).
Mr Malombe was a Kalonzo ally in the run-up to 2017 poll, which triggered the severing of a long-time political friendship between the former VP and his former party chairman David Musila. Musila and Malombe lost the Kitui Governor seat to Charity Ngilu.
Other Kalonzo Musyoka associates appointed are Machakos Women Representative Susan Musyoka, set to be member of the Regional Centre on Groundwater Resources, Training and Research in Eastern Africa while former East African MP Peter Mathuki will sit at the Kenya Investment Authority.
Those allied to Raila Odinga include Building Bridges Initiative member Adams Oloo (Kenya School of Government), IT specialist Brian Omwenga (Business Registration Service Board), lawyer Kioko Kilukumi (Energy Tribunal) and lawyer Melissa Ngania (HIV Tribunal). Also MPs Ochieng Mbeo (chair Fish Marketing Authority) and Nicholas Gumbo (chair Kenyatta National Hospital Board).
