Devolution CS Eugine Wamalwa has rubbished reports going around in the media that Kenyans have died of hunger ravaging parts of Turkana and Baringo Counties.Speaking to the press on Monday,CS Wamalwa said the government is yet to confirm any death from the current crisis which has caused public outrage among Kenyans.
”There are no confirmed deaths yet. What we have are just reports, which remain unverified,” said CS Wamalwa during an interview.
He assured Kenyans that despite the dire situation in Turkana and Baringo counties, the government has enough food in its reserves to feed every Kenyan and that there should be no need for alarm.
”For now we have enough food in the country,in our national silos we have about four million bags, all we have to do now is supply it to the drought hit counties,” he added.
However,it remains a question of whether state officials are truly conversant with what is going on in the ground or it is just a case of feigning ignorance and not giving the accurate information to the public to save face.Recent images and those who have been in the two counties have confirmed people have lost their lives from the ravaging hunger, and statement from CS Wamalwa may be a misrepresentation of how severe the crisis is.
The government says it intends to provide food assistance to the affected population which currently stands at approximately 1 million Kenyans. This population is spread across other five counties including Mandera,Garissa,Baringo,Kilifi,Tana River,West Pokot,Marsabit,Kajiado and Isiolo.
