Uhuru, Only Foreign President Who Shows Up in Congo For Tshisekedi’s Swearing In

Perhaps to show his relief that a fellow African President won elections in circumstances more mysterious than his, Uhuru Kenyatta has shown up in DR Congo for the swearing in of opposition leader Felix Tshisekedi.

Tshisekedi was sworn in on today (Thursday) as  Congo’s president, succeeding Joseph Kabila in the vast central African country’s first transfer of power through an election in 59 years of independence.

Democratic Republic of Congo’s outgoing President Joseph Kabila sits next to his successor Felix Tshisekedi during an inauguration ceremony whereby Tshisekedi will be sworn into office as the new president of the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Palais de la Nation in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, January 24, 2019, in this screen grab taken from video.
Tshisekedi’s victory in the Dec. 30 election was marred by accusations he struck a deal with the outgoing president to deny victory to another opposition candidate.
Wearing a blue suit and dark glasses, took the oath of office before a crowd of thousands of cheering supporters, government officials and foreign ambassadors.
However, in a sign of lingering doubts about the vote’s credibility, only Uhuru Kenyatta was a foreign head of state present.

According to reports, the state had invited 17 other Presidents among them including Tanzania, CAR, Zimbabwe, Malawi, SA , Ethiopia Sudan, Sudan, Egypt,Sierra Leone, Haïti among others.

The ceremony took place at the state’s Presidential Palace in Kinshasa.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka also attended the inauguration. The three were accompanied by Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and his Homa Bay counterpart Gladys Wanga together with senators Ledama Ole Kina and Amos Wako

Nonetheless, for a country that has had previous power transfers wrapped in coups, assassination or rebellion- the peaceful transition albeit allegedly rigged is worth noting.
