Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso might have made history as one of the few female Governors in the Country but she is a woman literally under siege and is walking on fire.
When you thought a walkout protest by Bomet MPs during a visit by President Uhuru Kenyatta against her for failing to recognize them exposed her soft political underbelly, then wait until you hear how a hostile crowd forced her to sneak out of a New Year’s party.
Governor Laboso failed to deliver her New Year address on Monday night after she encountered a hostile crowd at a local stadium.
Dr Laboso who was in the company of Senator Christopher Langat, Woman Rep Joyce Korir and several MCAs were greeted by residents chanting Chama Cha Mashinani slogans at the function.
Residents who braved a drizzle and a cold night waved the CCM placards and chanted support for the party as they surged forward while the leaders and organizers watched in utter shock from the dais.
Laboso was forced to sneak out of the function held at Bomet Green stadium after it turned out she was in for a hostile reception.
The ceremony which entailed prayers and an all night long entertainment by various secular and gospel artistes and comedians had been organized by the county government in collaboration with Taach FM, a local radio station.
“It is a tradition for the sitting governor and the leaders present to address the participants in such functions, but this time around, the crowd could not allow their representatives to do that,” said Mr Dancel Kirui, a former parliamentary aspirant in Bomet Central.
Mr Kirui said, “This is an indictment on the leaders of the county who should read the writing on the wall. It speaks of volumes of how the elected leaders are out of touch with the voters on the ground.”
Former governor Isaac Ruto, the Chama Cha Mashinani party leader who was dislodged from the position by Dr Laboso in the last general election, did not attend the ceremony. Isaac Ruto and his supporters have always blamed DP Ruto for allegedly rigging in Laboso.
But a hostile crowd is not all that gives Laboso sleepless nights. For months, there has been a simmering political tension between the governor and the seven MPs.
The lawmakers feel the governor is out of touch with issues affecting residents and that she is least concerned about the plight of the people, especially families evicted from the Mau Forest complex.
The legislators accuse the governor of ignoring them and working alone.
Few months ago, all elected leaders from the county snubbed Laboso’s ceremony to mark one year in office, leaving only nominated MCAs to attend. The MCAs had differed with Laboso over ward development fund kitty, which the governor refused to implement.
Despite all the challenges, however, Governor Laboso has put up a brave face and reached out to some MCAs who she now uses to fight her political wars against MPs.
