Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi wants voting made compulsory like in Brazil so that those who do not vote are charged before a court of law.
Kiaritu said this after it emerged that Governors and other leaders were stealing public money which was then being transformed into political capital that was used to bribe voters.
The revelation was made by outgoing EACC Chief Executive Officer, Halakhe Waqo who urged members of the public to help curb the vice by reporting cases to authorities.
The commission noted that former and current Governors’ wives were possessing IFMIS passwords through which they steal public funds.
EACC Vice Chairperson, Sophia Lepuchirit warned Governors against giving their spouses IFMIS password that has seen embezzlement of public funds for personal use.
“It is against the law for the county executives’ spouses to have knowledge of county government’s accounts details, leave alone accessing IFMIS passwords,” Lepuchirit stated.
IFMIS is the public electronic procurement system that provides an end-to-end platform intended to enhance accountability among suppliers and expenditures.
