Manners and grammar are not Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu’s strongest selling points. His strength perhaps lies in dishing handouts to Kiambu drunkards who need rehab more than peanuts that end up in liquor.
And in a show of that nonchalant naiveté, Waitutu launched a tirade of barbs against the County’s Woman Rep Gathoni Wamuchomba right in front of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
His issue? He is mad at Wa Muchomba for opening a rehabilitation center for alcohol and drug addicts.
The Kiambu governor argued that it was not possible to rehabilitate over 6,000 people and that is why he had a parallel programme where he gave them Ksh400 daily. And when the County Commander tried to calm him down, Baba Yao waved him off.
The shock on President Kenyatta face needed to be documented and trademarked. surprised as the Head of State witnessed Waititu dismiss the
“Ukienda kila mahali, kama hapa Ndumberi huezi kuta mlevi the whole day… mimi naskia vibaya sana… watu kama hawa utawapeleka rehab gani?” the Kiambu County boss asked.
Wamuchomba on her part argued that young people struggling with addiction should not be given money but receive treatment for their addiction in order to curb the vice once and for all.
The drama went down as Uhuru graced the graduation of 66 rehabilitated alcoholics who received certificates from the President after successfully completing a nine-month rehabilitation programme at Mama Care Rehabilitation Centre in Wangunyu Primary School, in the County.
President Kenyatta encouraged the recovering alcoholics to be ambassadors in the war against illicit alcohol and also urged them to hurry and get married so that they would start families.
And without directly telling Waititu he needs to up his game, the President commended the Kiambu women rep for initiating the rehab program and urged other counties to borrow a leaf.
“This is a good project that needs to be emulated countrywide. We have all witnessed where the monies given to women reps are going,” Uhuru urged.
Those rehabilitated are trained to be tailors, carpenters, and caterers to provide them with a source of income.
“We are giving them items bought by the NGAAF kitty to help them start businesses which will help support their lives and families,” Gathoni told the attendees.
She called out Governor Waititu’s style of fighting alcohol addiction in his county as a waste of time and resources.
