Mixed Reaction as ‘Nairobi Looks like London’ Following Matatu CBD Ban

Known for his knack to thrive where others have failed, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has moved to implement a ban that has been elusive for years.

His new implementation has seen thousands of commuters in Nairobi trek several kilometers to work following City Hall’s ban on matatus from picking up and dropping off passengers in the CBD.

The ban took effect as early as 4.00am, with police and county traffic marshals blocking matatus from entering the city center.

Those plying Jogoo road were dropped off at City Stadium while those using Thika road, Waiyaki Way, Uhuru Highway, Kipande and Limuru roads were dropped off at Fig tree Ngara and Museum Hill.

Matatus using Mombasa and Lang’ata Road dropped off passengers at Railways terminus.

While the ban has left Nairobi ‘looking like London’ as one tweep claimed, commuters will now have to trek on unpaved roads- in bad weather- and traders, who rely on matatus to ferry their merchandise to and from the CBD are in for tough times.
