Excitement as Kanjo Raid Supermarkets Forcing them to Sell Unga at Sh75

Nairobi county officials aka Kanjo on Thursday raided supermarkets and retail shops to enforce the Sh75 cost on a packet of Unga.

The raid followed an order by Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri to millers and traders not to exceed the price. Most traders ignored the order.

City Hall Trade and Licensing officer Michael Akoko led the operation in Supermarkets and stores within the city center and promised the crackdown will continue in all Nairobi’s estates to ensure 100 per cent compliance.

“We have launched the operation today and we are going to sustain it for a while until the directive is fully implemented. We are also going to take action against the traders who flout the directive,” said Akoko.

A number of leading supermarkets in the CBD including Tuskys, Naivas and Choppies have already complied.

Only Eastmatt Supermarket along Tom Mboya street was found selling packet at Sh85.

The supermarket’s Manager Joseph Mwangi said they will, however, lower the prices by next week.

During the Nairobi Trade Fair address, President Uhuru Kenyatta and Governor Sonko warned that those selling unga at a higher price will be charged.

“By the end of this year, the country will have a stock of 56 million bags against an annual consumption of 52 million bags, this means there will a surplus of four million bags hence significance reduction of a maize flour,’’ he said.

Sonko also has also issued a warning to milk sellers who inflate prices and those who dilute it in order to get more profits.

“We have received a number of complaints at City Hall of milk traders who dilute their milk in order to gain maximum profits from their sales,” added Sonko.
